Five emerging Korean artists came to NOMAD as part of Global Connect, an international exchange program presented by the Korea Arts Council (ARKO) exploring new possibilities at the intersection of art and technology.
 

For eight days in Montreal, the artists immersed themselves in the city’s experimental media and electronic arts scene — creating and presenting work, collaborating with local artists, participating in workshops at the Société des arts technologiques (SAT), and attending MUTEK Montréal.  
 

At the heart of their Montreal residency was a night at NOMAD.

On August 23, Eui-jin Kim, Se-kyung Son, Eun-song Shin, Hyuk-jin Choi and Ho-seung Chu took over NOMAD to present eeeeee, a showcase conceived and organized by the five artists themselves.
 

From choosing the venue and developing the program to inviting collaborators and operating the event, the artists led the entire process — turning NOMAD into a meeting point between Korea and Montreal for one night. 
 

The unusual title came from the vowel “e,” shared across the artists’ English names. Because the same letter can produce a different sound depending on who speaks it, eeeeee became a point of departure for exploring how sound, language, meaning and cultural context shift from one person — and one culture — to another. 
 

Montreal media artist Crazy Radio and electronic musician Leopoldo Facci joined the five visiting artists, creating an evening of live electronic music, sound, movement, media art and interactive visuals for a local audience at NOMAD. 
 

FIVE ARTISTS · FIVE LANGUAGES

Each artist approached the meeting of art and technology from a different direction.
 

Hyuk-jin Choi connected the movement of human joints to visual representations of information-processing systems.

Se-kyung Son captured body movement in real time and transformed it into musical events.

Eun-song Shin created a sound-based live performance drawing from childhood fantasy and autobiographical memory.

Ho-seung Chu combined synthesizer-based electronic music with interactive visuals generated in real time.

Eui-jin Kim reinterpreted binari, a traditional Korean blessing chant, through the language of electronic music, collaborating with Crazy Radio to bring Korean tradition into dialogue with contemporary media art.

Together, the works became less a conventional concert than an encounter between different creative languages — analogue and digital, traditional and contemporary, Korean and Québécois.
 

MONTREAL AS A CREATIVE LABORATORY

The evening at NOMAD was one part of a wider exploration of Montreal as an international centre for digital and immersive arts.
 

Following eeeeee, the artists participated in workshops with the Société des arts technologiques (SAT), exchanging ideas around spatial sound, immersive creation, scripting and stage implementation. They then immersed themselves in the official program of MUTEK Montréal, encountering electronic music, audiovisual performance and immersive work from artists around the world.

Reflecting on the experience, participant Eun-song Shin emphasized something that resonates deeply with NOMAD: that the sensations created by space and sound cannot be fully understood through documentation alone — they have to be experienced in person.

Global Connect then continued beyond Montreal, with the artists travelling to Linz, Austria, for a program connected to Ars Electronica, extending the exchange into another of the world’s major meeting points between art and technology.

A MEETING PLACE

For more than 16 years, NOMAD has existed somewhere between a studio, a stage, a workplace and a creative laboratory.
 

Projects like Global Connect are part of why.  Artists arrive from somewhere else.  They meet people who are here.  They experiment.  They make something that didn’t exist before.  And then they carry it somewhere new.

On August 23, that journey passed through NOMAD.

The Montreal edition of Global Connect and the eeeeee showcase at NOMAD received extensive coverage in the Korean cultural press, with reports appearing in News Culture, Seoul Culture Today, ACROFAN, Aju News and Asia Daily.
 

The coverage highlighted the artists’ experimental performances at NOMAD and situated the showcase within their wider journey through Montreal’s art-and-technology ecosystem. News Culture described eeeeee as the centerpiece of the eight-day international exchange, while several publications documented the artists’ progression from NOMAD to SAT and MUTEK Montréal.
