From Montreal to Korea: Global Connect at NOMAD

On August 23, five emerging Korean artists arrived at NOMAD for an experimental evening of sound, movement, electronic music and interactive media.

What we didn’t quite realize at the time was how far that evening would travel.

The showcase was part of Global Connect, an international exchange program presented by the Korea Arts Council (ARKO), bringing artists from Korea into Montreal’s creative ecosystem. Eui-jin Kim, Se-kyung Son, Eun-song Shin, Hyuk-jin Choi and Ho-seung Chu conceived and produced the evening themselves, collaborating with Montreal artists Crazy Radio and Leopoldo Facci and transforming NOMAD into a meeting point between two creative communities for one night.

Their time at NOMAD was only the beginning.

Over the following week, the artists continued through Montreal, participating in workshops at the Société des arts technologiques (SAT) and experiencing MUTEK Montréal before the Global Connect journey continued to Ars Electronica in Linz, Austria.

And then the story travelled home.

In the days following the Montreal program, we began discovering articles about Global Connect appearing across Korean and international cultural media. News Culture, Seoul Culture Today, ACROFAN, Aju News and Asia Daily all covered the exchange, several of them carrying photographs of the artists performing at NOMAD.

There’s something we love about that.

NOMAD has spent more than 16 years being a place where people from different disciplines, cultures and corners of the world cross paths. Sometimes those encounters become films. Sometimes performances. Sometimes collaborations. And sometimes something that happens for a few hours in a room in Montreal’s Mile End ends up travelling halfway around the world.

That’s exactly what happened here.
